Perhaps the most popular home improvement project, painting can give you a dramatic change in the appearance and feel of your house with very little investment of money. This is especially true when your painting project is done with the same steps that professionals use in order to crate the best looking final product possible. By following the steps in this article, you can make your painting project turn out great.

The first thing you should do is use tape and drop cloths. While it may seem like it is an unnecessary sink for time and effort, the amount of time you put into protecting the surfaces that are not supposed to be painted, like floor and trim, will pay you back. You will be able to paint faster and you will have a much more polished end product.

Instead of taping around outlet covers, or just painting around them, remove the outlet covers completely. This will speed up your painting project, and will allow you to paint underneath the covered area. It will look great and save you time as removing an outlet cover usually only takes about thirty seconds to a minute.

If you are going to paint wood trim or any other woodwork in your home, it is vital for you to thoroughly sand and clean said woodwork. If there are paint chips attached or the surface is rough, your brand new paint job is going to look just as bad as the woodwork looks currently, maybe even worse. Sand the wood to a smooth finish and fill any cracks with wood putty. This only requires time, and by doing this you can restore your woodwork to a ‘like new’ appearance with minimal amount of monetary input.

Before you get started with painting the walls, you should look for any areas that require some touch ups. Take a flashlight or other work light and hold it near the wall. By doing this, you should be able to see areas of the wall that are raised, and require sanding, or that are indented and require filling. Fill the dents in your wall with putty, then sand those areas along with the other raised areas to create a smooth finished product before you start painting. Remember you should have a drop cloth down, so clean up of the dust will be a breeze.

When you paint the walls, you should use a roller rather than a brush. Not only does this allow you to go faster, it will give a better finished product. When choosing your roller, read the package to determine what nap will suit your project best. Remember, an extra dollar or two here will go a long way!

While this process may require you to put in some time up front, you will most likely save all that time with the ease that your painting project will progress. You won’t have to paint around obstacles or worry about dripping paint where it shouldn’t be. Once you have put this time in up front, you can paint much faster and you will end up with a professional looking project. Good luck in your home improvement.
